In 2018, I had just wrapped up a long few years of touring my debut full length record ‘Emotions and Math’. I remember feeling lucky to be a working musician and simultaneously the most tired I’d ever been. I hadn’t bargained for the repetitive nature of being on tour. At some point, most likely in an effort to stay sane, I started to daydream about making a zine called ‘Born Yesterday’ as a fun art project. At the time, I thought up a theme for the zine and I took submissions of art and poetry. In the end, the zine never got made, but an EP did and it was of course entitled ‘Born Yesterday’.
Now, seven years later, it’s time to bring my original idea into the world! As of today, my digital zine begins here on Substack. I am happy to share that you will be able to rely on ‘Born Yesterday’ for:
MUSIC: Videos of covers performed by yours truly, curated playlists of my favorite songs, along with LIVE mini concert events.
SONGWRITING: Musings on my own songwriting process and music history along with LIVE Songwriting Q&A’s
RECIPES: The food that I cook and the tea that I make while working on new music.
PHOTOGRAPHY: Images taken on my Fuji.
POETRY: Words written on my Olivetti.
LIT CLUB: Book Recommendations and occasional ‘Read-alongs’
*For the last year, I have hosted a book club with an awesome community of readers on substack called ‘LIT CLUB’ and now I’ll be folding that project into ‘Born Yesterday’, offering a larger variation of topics while still honoring the books that I love and taking occasional opportunities to read together. This last year we read everything from Kim Gordon’s memoir to Maya Angelou.*
I’m glad to be connecting with you all in a new way. I’ m really REALLY excited to play for you. There’s a lot of music I’ve been learning and listening to that has become such a big inspiration as of late that wasn’t on my radar for years. Bob Dylan’s entire catalog has come alive for me, I’ve been uncovering Bonnie Raitt records that had flown under my radar, Sardinian pastoral songs have found their way into my ears, Marvin Gaye’s live records… there’s a lot of music out there that I humbly admit I haven’t heard and it’s inspring.
I look forward to our time together. I’m working on a lot of new songs to record soon and I thought in the mean time we might see each other here. For those that can’t afford a paywall, there will be some free offerings and for those that would like to dive deeper you can explore the subscriptions options. I appreciate your community and I can’t wait.
Lots of light,
Margaret
This is good. We like this.
Saw you at the Lodge Room in LA when you were here last. Best 3 piece rock band I’ve seen since The Police. I’m still talking about it to friends whenever music comes up in conversation.
